1/3/2024 0 Comments Snes revisions![]() Monster World IV tend to avoid the usual Yamaha "harsh notes" while using careful instrumentation to not make the track overly-layered, limiting the metalic "tingling". It really depends on how composers work around the limitations. I think this is why SNES people often say the Genesis tends to sound more "metalic" in comparison to the Super Nintendo, while Genesis folk will criticize SNES music for being muffled. Granted, it doesn't sound as "clear" as an instrument that would've been played at its native frequency natively, such as the Yamaha chip, but the result can be considered more pleasing to the ear overall compared to the raw low-bitrate sound unfiltered. The SPC has some filtering and reverb that can mask those effects. The problem with most low-bitrates samples is the noticable "crackle" as it tries to modulate at those frequencies (this is most noticable when comparing Genesis and Super Nintendo voice clips). For an arcade game that has a strictly better soundtrack for its port, see Atomic Runner.Ĭlick to shrink.I think the SPCs "limitation" with clarity actually beomes its strength when playing back samples, considering the low-bitrates often used during playback. The Genesis version changes the pacing of most songs significantly, resulting in almost entirely different songs that may or may not work as well. ![]() This isn't exactly true, I'm not sure why it's repeated so much. Being able to just toss an extra chip in a cart whenever you want sometimes helps, but that's a crummy fix to the problem. You have to know a lot more about the platform to get similar results as other platforms. In general, the SNES is really complicated hardware. Before the SNES, arcade games were already starting to appear that did sampling better. The Genesis, meanwhile, uses robust tone generation that had already been proven for some years, with the only real drawback being that Sega went with a "light" version for cost purposes. The SNES uses a haphazard sampling system with substandard output honestly it's a miracle anything sounds good coming out of that platform. What the Genesis does is technically better.
